Mallika is making news in California

The bold, courageous beauty had shied away from the Indian media and prefers to be seen with the Chings-&-Changs and Yin-&-Yangs. Well, this time round it’s California, that Mallika is shining in. She showed up at a fund-raising, wine-testing luncheon in Malibu, a few days ago and created quite a stir with her trademark deep neck. The actress, we hear, was auctioned, and the winning bidder got to spend a day with her — you know the usual lunch, photo-shoots et al. Of course the money ($1400) went towards charity. Maan gaye Mallika-e-Sherawat.

When Shah Rukh became Abhi...

We recently learnt that when Gauri was to introduce Shah Rukh to her parents, she wasn’t so sure how they would react if they found out that he belonged to another community. So she conveniently changed Shah Rukh’s name and introduced him as Abhinav to her parents! Looking back, Gauri describes this as “silly and childish.” And as for SRK, he was ironically shooting for My Name is Khan while Gauri narrated this sweet little anecdote.

Shilpa Shetty says IPL is a long-term investment for me

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who co-owns the IPL Rajasthan Royals team with her London-based businessman boyfriend Raj Kumdra, considers it a long-term profitable investment.

"Raj and I have thought of it as a long-term investment plan and I really think the way the Rajasthan Royals have turned out as a team has been spectacular," Shetty, who was in Johannesburg to support her team told the Times.co.za in an interview.

Shetty is the latest Bollywood celebrity to invest in the popular Twenty20 format of the game after Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Preity Zinta.

Shetty is the co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, the winning team of 2008.

The IPL matches have been shifted to South Africa this year and will start from April 18.

Talking about her expectations from the team, the actress said, "Their (Rajasthan Royals) growth as a team and an investment has gone by leaps and bounds. It made money even last year, and it will continue to make money this year, despite the whole shift from India to South Africa."

Shetty said she liked the shorter format of the game as she never had the patience to spend whole day on cricket.

"I've always been a very impatient person. I always like to watch the last 20 overs. I've never had the patience to watch a whole match. This whole Twenty20 format for me is really interesting and I'm a huge fan of that," the actress said.

Asked to name her favourite cricketer, the actress said, "I think it's rather unfair of me to take just one player's name, especially when you're a co-owner. So I just simply say whoever makes the most runs, and gets the most wickets, for the Rajasthan Royals, becomes my favourite player."

Bollywood Actor Barred From Contesting Polls

India's Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a Bollywood actor who has served nearly two years of a six-year prison sentence for illegal arms possession cannot contest India's general elections next month, a news report said.

A three-judge panel of the court refused Sanjay Dutt's plea to suspend his conviction and allow him to stand as a candidate for the Samajwadi, or Socialist Party, because he had been convicted of a serious offense, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Supreme Court officials were not available to comment Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Dutt told reporters that he would respect the verdict of the court.

"Sanjay Dutt is a nice man and he wanted to serve people, but this court order has prevented him from doing that, " Rajendra Choudhary, a spokesman for the Socialist Party said adding that the party would also respect the court's verdict.

In July 2007, the actor was sentenced to six years in prison for possession of illegal arms supplied by men convicted in a 1993 Mumbai bomb attack that killed 257 people and was blamed on Islamic extremists.

Mr. Dutt, a Hindu, was arrested in 1994 and had spent a total 20 months in prison when he was released on bail in November 2007 pending an appeal. No hearing date has been approved.

He was acquitted of more serious terrorism and conspiracy charges.

Indian law bans anyone who has been sentenced to serve more than two years in prison from contesting elections.

Voting in India's national elections will begin April 16 and last through May.

Mr. Dutt is popular for his roles as a reformed thug who follows the teachings of nonviolence advocate and Indian independence hero Mohandas Gandhi.

His latest film bit hit was "Lage Raho Munnabhai" or "Carry on Munnabhai," in 2006.

SRK drops ‘Kolkata’ Is Dada next???

If this seems too much to swallow, even if you are not a die-hard Bengali fan, think about what it would take to drop The Great Bengal Tiger from the captaincy?

There is certainly more to this, than what meets the eye, especially if the Knight Riders’ coach, John Buchanan’s shocking revelation that Ganguly could be replaced with in-form McCullum is to be taken seriously.

So did the Badshah of Bollywood do this to try and turn his spate of bad luck, considering the fact that Jumaani clearly sounded off his (correct) prophesies on the same? In the first year of IPL, Jumaani had gone on record to say that Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t add up well, but sans ‘Kolkata’, just ‘Knight Riders’ added up to an auspicious number, as it totaled to the number 1 of the powerful Sun. Explaining further, Jumaani maintained that Sourav, a # 8, was far from lucky for SRK, as even in the past, this number has not been too good for the Badshah.

Says Jumaani, “On November 2, SRK had entered his 44th year, and 4+4 = 8, represents Saturn . Unfortunately, as predicted, it didn’t auger well for SRK what with his shoulder injury keeping him out of action for months and his Billu not faring well too at the BO. “We had, in fact, earlier warned him not to release Asoka on the 26th. He did, and the film bombed,” recalls the numerologist.

According to Jumaani, his association with Sourav Ganguly (08/07) who captained Knight Riders, wasn’t too fruitful. “In fact, right at the beginning, we had warned that the colour black used for their team jersey wasn’t auspicious as it is also the hue of the same Saturn and generally a colour of mourning in many communities. In fact, another team sporting the same colour that has never ever made it in the big league, is New Zealand. It has, on so many occasions, despite playing well, not managed to win a major tournament, leave alone the World Cup.”

Now that SRK’s team is using only Knight Riders in its logo, Jumaani says, “Our next suggestion to the team would be to also change the black colour of its outfits. And Sourav should wear jersey No 24 that we had recommended earlier too, which did him a world of good in the World Cup as he scored three centuries then, being the only player in any World Cup, along with Mark Waugh, to achieve this honour.”

But, what went wrong with Sourav and his coach once again? Having just recovered from the Greg Chappel spat, he is up again in a face-off with someone from his own camp! Informs Jumaani, “Born on 08/07/1972, Sourav is governed by Saturn Moon and Neptune, and his zodiac sign is Cancer. Two others who have captained India successfully have also been Cancerians. And they are Sunil Gavaskar (10/07) and Dhoni (07/07). Hence, coach John Buchanan’s claim that he is not a good captain does not hold water, at least as per numerology, and also not to forget the fact that Sourav has been one of India’s most successful captains.”

He goes on to say, “The combination of such numbers makes Cancerians quite creative and unconventional in their approach. However, like their symbol of the crab, which never walks consistently, such people are subject to sudden upheavals too. They are also quite moody in nature, as the Moon affects their mind, just as it causes high and low tides in the oceans. In Sourav’s case, Saturn often makes him misunderstood, and hence politics is not his cup of tea. Controversies usually surround the number 8s. Being a ‘Water’ sign as he is a Cancerian, Sourav had great difficulties with Greg Chappel earlier, who is a ‘Fire’ sign, being a Leo (07/08). Fire and Water can hardly stay together; no wonder then that John Buchanan is a Fire sign too, like all Arians (05/04/1953)! We know that Dada is currently in his 37th year and 3+7 = 1, of the Sun, and it is amongst his best numbers. Lakhs of people worship the mighty Sun. Sourav’s decision to retire gracefully from the Indian team had been timed well, in this sense. In fact, Dhoni won the best player internationally for ICC now when he’s in his 28th year, and 28=1.”

Sen sisters to walk the ramp

The controversy over she not being sexy enough to carry off an item song might have every reason to confuse and disappoint her. But, Raima would rather push the memories of the whole episode behind her and move on to other things. And one of the reasons keeping her in high spirits now, is the fact that she will be returning to Kolkata on April 1 to walk the ramp for the weavers at the Kolkata Fashion Week. Joining her for the same event, would be sister Riya.

By her own admission, it’s been “many, many years” since Raima walked the ramp in Kolkata. “Every year, I’ve done shows in Delhi and Mumbai. I’m happy to know that Kolkata is also organising its own fashion week and am waiting to see how it goes. I’ll be walking the Kolkata ramp after many, many years,” she says about her show on April 2.

Though the siblings will not be showcasing the same designers’ creations, any professional work that brings the sisters back to their hometown, is celebration enough. “Since we belong to Kolkata, the fact that this fashion week is being held in the city, makes it all the more special for us,” says Riya, adding, “I’m always happy to come back to Kolkata, especially when work takes me there. I do a lot of ramp walks. But every time I walk the ramp, it feels like I’m doing it for the first time. The experience remains novel.”

As for movies, the sisters are poised at an interesting stage in their career, what with both balancing work in art house Bengali films and commercial Hindi cinema. Apart from Rituparno Ghosh’s Noukadubi that has the siblings in the same film, Raima is also in talks with two Bengali directors. “Since I haven’t signed anything yet, I wouldn’t wish to reveal the details now. Aparna Sen’s The Japanese Wife should release sometime this year. I’m also awaiting the release of Vinay Shukla’s Mirch, that also has Konkona and Shahana Goswami. That apart, there’s Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti with Amitabh Bachchan and Madhavan,” says Raima.
Riya, who has supposedly given one of her career’s best performances in Noukadubi, hasn’t taken up any new Bengali projects. “I’m busy with two Hindi mainstream films, the shooting of which will begin soon. Besides, I’m awaiting the release of Paying Guest.”

Till such time that the big screen dazzles with their sensational presence, Kolkata will only be too happy to host the Sens.

Salman Khan Slaps Katrina Kaif

Bad Boy Salman Khan might run into another failure in his relationship. And if sources are to be believed Salman Khan has slapped Katrina kaif over a small tiff. Is Salman Khan behaving the same way he did with Aishwariya Rai? Is Possessiveness the issue or there is another side to this problem?

As per a Goa Local Newspaper, Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar were shooting in Goa. Sallu Bhai feeling insecure about Kaif with Akki, bumped into the Shooting Sets and had tiff with Katrina. Probably Salman Khan has asked Katrina not to work with Akshay Kumar. But what Salman should know if that Katrina has given almost all her hits with Khiladi Number 1.

This isn’t the first time Salman has slapped Katrina. Few years back, a eye witness accounts to a Mumbai Local Newspaper that Kat and Sallu were sitting in a coffee shop. And suddenly Salman stood up and slapped Katrina. Though Katrina later refused to acknowledge that event!

What is ailing Salman in the relationship? It is said Salman is not happy with Katrina’s closeness with her co-stars. Recently he bumped into the sets of Rajneeti because of the rumours of closeness between Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. Before that Salman was not happy with Katrina’s closeness with Akshay Kumar. So much was the fear that Katrina on a chat show said she is not a close friend with Akki! So is insecurity of loosing Katrina causing problems in relationship? Is it the age factor?

Salman earlier had similar in-security problems with Ash, the relationship that run for three years. Salman is said to have barged into sets of Aishwariya, reportedly verbally abused her in front of co-actors, which costed her films and also made her depressed.

We can just hope that Salman learns from his past relationship and ensures a good healthy relationship, else we will see another failed relationship in Bollywood!

Kangana to play Haji Mastan’s wife

Before playing the alluring star Sona who Haji Mastan wins over in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Kangana Ranaut has made up her mind to meet the smuggler’s love interest on whose life the film is based. Says an excited Kangana, “You could call it either the love interest or interesting love. But the don and the actress shared such an amazing relationship. He made her laugh all the time and she liked that. He gave her all the attention and love she craved for.”

So fascinated was Kangana with the character that she decided to track down Sona. Sona lives quietly, away from the public eye, in Mumbai. Sona was one of the many starlets in Bollywood in 1970s. Haji was so besotted by her that he asked his filmmaker friends to cast her in their films. He produced a few films for her and friend Raj Khosla even made Kachche Dhaage (1973) with Sona in a pivotal role, but her career never really took off.

Finally, after a lot of hunting, Kangana has tracked down Sona, and is all set to meet her. “Yes, I am going to meet Sona soon. That’s going to be a crucial part of my preparation to play the character,” she says.

Apparently, Haji was in love with Sona because she resembled his favorite actress Madhubala. Interestingly this isn’t the first time that Kangana would be playing such a character. In Anurag Basu’s Gangster, she played Abu Salem’s moll. But Kangana was unable to meet Monica Bedi then, on whom Kangana’s character was modeled. This would be Kangana’s third biographical character, after Monica and later, Parveen Babi in Woh Lamhe.

Shilpa Shetty In Talks About 'Enders Role

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty could soon become a familiar face on British television screens, it has emerged.

Shetty, who has appeared in numerous Indian films, recently bought a £10m mansion in Surrey with boyfriend Raj Kundra.

Up until now, her exposure to UK audiences has been surrounded in scandal.

In April 2007, during an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi, she attracted outrage when Hollywood actor Richard Gere repeatedly kissed her in public.

It happened three months after she won a controversial series of Celebrity Big Brother.

The show hit the headlines when Jade Goody and other housemates were accused of racism and bullying the glamorous Indian star.

Shetty and Goody were later reconciled and the pair became friends.

They appeared together on the Indian version of the show last year when Goody received news she had cervical cancer, from which she died last Sunday aged 27.

Shetty said Goody helped to make her a household name in the UK, describing her as the "architect of my fame".

The actress was previously offered a part in Eastenders after her Celebrity Big Brother win but turned it down to concentrate on her Bollywood career.
